The land of lichens.

Lichens clothe the trees like exotic ornaments; some drape them in green lace while others cling to their surfaces, adding extra texture and color to the bark. When I first moved to Oregon many years ago, one of the first things I noticed was the lichens. Hailing originally from Ireland, where there are many lichens, I had been aware of these fascinating organisms. However, it wasn’t until I had lived in the Pacific northwest for a couple of winters that I began to truly appreciate their variety and often dazzling beauty. They really come into their own during the winter and provide some much welcome style and color to an often monotone landscape.
