Who has the time to stop and look closely at a leaf or flower? It is only when I work in my yard or draw a plant that I really stop and look. I love growing and drawing plants, native plants especially. However, the work I show here is from other parts of the United States and the world i.e. “non-native”.

Most of my pen and ink work started out as black and white illustrations for the “Digging In” gardening column of the Washington Post newspaper. I created a weekly illustration for the Post for 10 years. When that work finished I had a large library of black and white illustrations and wanted to do something with them. I discovered that by adding color digitally I could create new images; many of which you can now see in my gallery and shop.

I also love to use graphite and watercolor. Usually that’s the way my watercolor botanical illustrations start; making in depth studies of the plant in graphite first before jumping in with the color.

You can purchase most of my botanical art in card or print format, and some as botanical tea towels, in the shop.
